Before you go to sleep
Your body has stopped for the day. Your mind has not noticed yet.
This is the hour when everything unfinished comes to find you. Tomorrow's list. A conversation replayed with better lines. The sudden certainty that you have forgotten something important.
It is not that you are anxious. It is that nothing else has been asking for your attention, and the day has been waiting for a gap.
Give the day somewhere to end.
A few minutes before sleep, in the dark, without your phone. Not to fix anything — only to let the day finish somewhere other than in your head at two in the morning.
If the list starts up again — and it will — you do not need to fight it. Tell it, honestly, that you will look at it in the morning. Then return to the breath. You may have to do this five times. That is normal, and it is still working.
Some nights this makes you sleepy. Some nights it does not. That is not the measure. The measure is whether the day was allowed to close, rather than being carried into the dark half-open.
A day that ends deliberately is easier to leave behind than one that simply runs out.
